National Donut Day

Happy Donut Day!

I don’t know about you, but of all of the sweets, donuts are my downfall. The softer and sugary-er, the better! Oh, gosh, and if they’re still warm, be still my heart; I’m in heaven.  So, this morning when I heard it was National Donut Day, I immediately remembered this donut display in lieu of wedding cake one of our brides did last December.  The donuts came from Sublime Donuts in Atlanta and were absolutely divine! They even cut a donut as part of the reception.

While you’re at your favorite donut shoppe today, maybe consider doing donuts instead of a traditional bride or groom cake. I promise your guests will thank you. (At least I will!)

Catering Trends: Late-Night Stations

This week we are excited to have a guest blog from Connor at Epting Events. Epting Events caters many weddings and events throughout the Southeast. End Your Event With a Bang!
Ever heard the saying that nothing good happens after midnight? Anyone who has eaten a juicy hamburger after a late night would beg to differ.  It’s easy to have so much fun dancing, mingling and laughing at a great wedding that you forget to eat until the buffet is already packed up.  Instead of punishing your fun-loving friends, reward them for their festive behavior by serving a delicious late night snack at your wedding!
Like every detail in the wedding, this little treat should represent the bride and groom.  Sources of inspiration could include beloved childhood treats, favorite past times, or local cuisine.  Have a groom from Philadelphia and a bride who loved baking with her grandmother as a little girl?  Pass mini Philly cheesesteaks, warm chocolate chip cookies and a shot of ice cold milk.  Most late night items are miniature, which makes them even more fun to eat.

The options are endless at Epting Events, but one of our favorite late night options is “The 21 Club”.  This station includes an attendant serving 21 Club Hamburger Sliders (complete with our special 21 sauce!), mini grilled cheese, and an order of fries with lots of toppings. If you don’t want a whole station, we can always pass items throughout the dance floor.  We’ve never seen anyone turn down a meatloaf slider while dancing up a storm to Lady Gaga!

Another Epting Event favorite is the Praline Station.  A true Southern sweet, pralines are a great way to introduce your Yankee guests to the South! We bring the old-fashioned copper cauldron and mix up the pralines over an open fire as your guests look on.  The smell is divine and gives your guests a sample of what’s in store!  No one can eat just one, so we recommend packaging pralines in custom bags or boxes for your guests to take home.  Another sweet item option (and one of my favorites): The Funnel Cake Station. These favorite fair goodies come complete with powdered sugar, warm maple pecan sauce and fresh strawberries. YUM!

Help for Choosing Your Wedding Reception Menu

We are so surprised at how many couples have no clue what type of food they want to serve at a very important event- their wedding! They ask us to choose or they just want to be presented with a “package.”

Why don’t we want to choose our first wedded meal?

“But I have to choose based on my budget,” you might say. There are options within every budget range. We choose what we eat everyday, based on what we like, and what we have a taste for even if we are choosing between fast food restaurants on opposite sides of the road or between the cans in our pantry or the frozen meals in our freezer.

So now that we have decided to exercise our right to choose the cuisine at our wedding – how do we decide? We’re not going to decide for you. We want you to ask yourself a few questions in different areas: Preferences of the Couple, Preferences of the Guests, and Wedding Style.

Preferences of the couple

· What do you order when you go out to eat?

-Tapas? Chicken breasts and a vegetable? Steak and potatoes?

· What kind of salad do you usually order? House salad or spinach with sesame ginger dressing? Cobb salad? Chopped salad? Ceasar?

· Do you like foods you can make at home or do you like to see a more creative plate when you are eating out?

· What hors d’ouevres do you get excited about when you are at a party? If you are looking out the corner of your eye for a waiter to return for a certain tasty bite, what is on that tray?

Preferences of the guests (remember you can’t accommodate everyone perfectly– consider the majority)

· Are your guests heavy meat eaters?

· Will a large number of your guests eat seafood? Including shellfish?

· Are your guest partiers – will they take a few bites and get back on the dance floor?

· Are your guests willing to stand? Or do they need to be seated and served as much as possible?

· Are your guests adventurous? Or will they prefer common, comfort foods?

· Do your guests eat a lot? When it comes to food, do you need to steer your budget towards quantity (you know who you are if these are your people).

Complementing Your Other Wedding Plans

· Would you like to share regional specialties of your wedding location or hometown with guests?

· Is your wedding modern? Do you want cutting edge cuisine? Or would you like to take traditional foods and serve them in a contemporary vessel or manner (which is a very modern thing to do now)

· Informal? How informal? Baskets of homemade potato chips informal?

· Would you like your food, perhaps just your appetizers or desserts, to compliment your wedding colors? Yes, this can be done without sacrificing taste! (but notice I said compliment, and not match)

These are some of the questions we ask our brides and couples in our wedding consultations. It helps us create a custom menu that the couple can be excited about serving to their guests (and eating from their to-go box after the wedding). Ask these questions of yourself and your fiancé and see what kind of menu you and your caterer come up with!
